Description

Flamenco con Magdalena is a performance program inspired by the dance and music of Andalucía, Spain.

La Magdalena, an award-winning dancer, teacher, and choreographer who divides her time between Seville, Spain and New York City, is accompanied in authentic costume by talented dancers, guitarist, percussionist, and singer.

A typical show is several short sets or one long performance, and varies according to the host's needs. Each performer shines as a soloist, and is also joined by the group for several lively ensemble numbers and musical arrangements. Demonstrations or audience participation can also be incorporated into the program.

What is Flamenco? The evolution of flamenco is bound up with the history of Andalucía, where over the centuries Europe has mingled with Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas. Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Celts, Moors, Jews and Gypsies made their home in the region, whose unique melting pot of cultures found expression in diverse forms. Pure Flamenco today is a largely improvised form that uses voice, guitar, hand-clapping and dance to create an eruption of emotion: passion, pathos, joy and rebellion. Each performer carries his / her own expressive charge and specific style, yet the group communicates intensively- and in the moment - to create unified impromptu explosions of artistry.

Flamenco con Magdalena can be booked for shows, demonstrations, parties, workshops, arts-in-education programming, corporate events, festivals, and full-length performances.
