Description

18-year-old Zhao Yang Ming Tian has been hailed as 'an elegant and sincere artist with a sensitive… magic touch designed for an international career'. The teen prodigy was born in Hainan, China, and started learning the piano at the age of 4. At 13, he was accepted by the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, and began studying with renowned pianists Chen Bigang and Ling Yuan. Subsequently, as a recipient of the Lee Foundation Talent Scholarship, he spent two years at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore, studying piano performance under Mr. Benjamin Loh. He is presently a full-scholarship holder at the University of Kansas, under the tutelage of Steinway Artist Dr. Steven Spooner.

Since taking part in the Hong Kong Mozart Competition in 2003, where he was the Second Prizewinner, this teen sensation has received several international accolades. He won Gold awards at the China Central Television's Youth Piano Competition in 2004, as well as the "Kadenza" Youth Competition in China three years later, where he also claimed the First prize. In 2010, at the inaugural International Chopin Piano Competition held in Singapore, Ming Tian charmed a local audience and an international jury to sweep both the Audience Prize as well as the Second Prize (Category E). A local reviewer praised the "vast palette of sound and emotions" displayed in his "awe-inspiring" performance. A year later, Ming Tian again won the Audience Prize and was placed Second in The International Institute for Young Musicians International Piano Competition 2011 held in Lawrence, Kansas.

In the years 2010 and 2011, he was handpicked by Steinway Artist Adam Gyorgy to join the Adam Gyorgy Castle Academy in Hungary; there, he successfully performed as a soloist in Pomaz and Kemence .

In January 2011, he returned to Hainan for a rapturous homecoming and a solo recital.

While studying in Singapore, he gave numerous performances at the Lee Foundation Theatre and elsewhere, both as a soloist and a chamber musician. In 2011, after a successful solo recital at the Esplanade Recital Hall, a local newspaper carried the following comment: "Ever wondered what celebrity pianists Lang Lang and Li Yundi were like before they became really famous?"

In July 2011, Ming Tian was invited to give performances in Spooner hall, Kansas, as well as for the Kansas Public Radio.

In the coming season, Ming Tian will appear in several concerts in various cities in China, including Kunming and Lanzhou, where he will be performing a concerto with the Lanzhou orchestra. Thereafter, he will make his debut in Thailand by presenting a solo recital in Bangkok.

Despite his youth, Ming Tian is also active in piano pedagogy, with a particular focus on the technical aspects of performance. In the summer of 2011, he gave a masterclass and lectured on piano technique at the Piano Association in Hainan, China. He was also invited to conduct a series of masterclasses in the University of Hainan.

Ming Tian's first CD album, "Memories of a Dream" will be officially released in August 2012.
