Description
"ELOQUENT"..."He played with sensitivity, a graceful introspection, careful workmanship and an ear for timbral shading."..."A fluent guitarist"--The New York Times -
Guitarist Andrew Schulman is a soloist and the leader of a string ensemble, the Abaca String Band. He also appears in duo performances with his wife, singer/guitarist Wendy Sayvetz.
His YouTube page contains over thirty videos; solo and with the ensemble.
He has held several high profile steady engagements in New York over the past three decades: Windows On The World, The Palm Court/The Plaza Hotel, The Mark Hotel, and The InterContinental/The Barclay. He currently appears every Wednesday and Friday at Alouette, located on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
Mr. Schulman is also a recording artist (Centaur Records, Abaca CDs) and concert player: Carnegie Recital Hall, Merkin Hall in NY - Royal Albert Hall, Purcell Room in London, etc. His appearances for special events have included The White House (1997 & 1999), the Library of Congress, and many other notable places.
He is the founder, in 1990, and music director, of the Abaca String Band: 8-string guitar, mandolin, violin, viola, and double bass. The group was ensemble-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for Membership Events from 1991-2004, and on the roster of the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series from 1995-2007. Known for his own arrangements of a wide ranging repertoire; Dowland, Bach, Tarrega, Villa-Lobos, Gershwin, Beatles, etc., as well as his own tuneful compositions (published by Berben Edizioni Musicali of Italy), he is highly experienced in creating a sound that fits the needs of the host.
In addition to his regular performance work he has recently become a medical musician, helping to heal critically ill patients with his music in the Surgical ICU at Beth Israel Medical Center in NY. He was named NY-1's "New Yorker of the Week" for this work and has been the subject of several TV broadcasts (NY-1, WABC Eyewitness News, WNBC/MSNBC) and newspaper articles (The Daily News, Town & Village).
He is available as a soloist, with the Abaca String Band, and in a duo with his wife, Wendy Sayvetz/singer-guitarist (the Abaca String Band also available with Wendy as vocalist).
