About Vendor

Learn more about this vendor for your event.

THE MAGILLS play innovative Celtic & light classical music with power & grace, and ranging from the stately & exquisite to the driving & wildly beautiful. Instruments include wooden & silver flutes, guitar, vocals & cittern (10-string mandolin). Beth & Jim are both professionals with 25 years experience playing for weddings, receptions, corporate events, and more. We can provide our own compact, high-quality sound system when required, & are available as a duo or trio with Andrew Finn Magill, on fiddle, guitar and low whistle when his schedule permits. Visit our website for more information. JIM is an award-winning songwriter and instrumentalist with a clear tenor voice that earned him honors as a three-time finalist for College Entertainer of the Year. He is the founding Director of the Swannanoa Gathering Folk Arts Workshops at Warren Wilson College, and in 1994, was awarded the first Fellowship in Songwriting and Composition from the North Carolina Arts Council. With numerous album and performance credits, including appearances with Emmy Lou Harris and Tom Paxton, Jim's original songs have been covered by such artists as Mike Cross, the Smith Sisters, Cucanandy & the Shaw Bros., and have been featured on NPR's Thistle & Shamrock. View our discography. In the world of graphic arts, his cover designs for the Swannanoa Gathering's catalogs have won six design awards, he's been a two-time finalist for Photoshop World's Guru Awards, and he has consulted on website design for several luthiers. BETH grew up studying Classical music, then discovered Celtic music after college, and now feels absolutely delighted she can do both, depending on the occasion. Currently, she plays mostly Celtic/light classical and contra dance music on wooden & silver flutes and tin whistles. She is a recording session musician, having recorded several albums with singer/songwriter, Johnsmith, grammy award-winning songwriter Jon Vezner, hammered dulcimists Jerry Read Smith and Jim Taylor, and more. With a passionate, exuberant style, Beth was also a founding member of Asheville's ground-breaking Celtic band, Mooncoin. She served as the music director for Highland Repertory Theater's production, A Mislaid Heaven, and she currently plays with The Magills, Southwind and various other musicians. When not playing weddings, background music for receptions and conferences, or working on writing projects, she teaches Irish flute and tin whistle, offers workshops entitled 'Everyone is musical...Period.', and leads bi-monthly community sings, also known as the “Sing Together” series, at Asheville's The Diana Wortham Theatre, with her husband/bandmate, Jim.
