Booking Ska Bands

Ska music originated in Jamaica in the early 1950s. The sound of ska music is unique to Jamaica, with its bouncy rhythms, accented upbeat, and colorful brass instrumentation. This makes it perfect for dancing! During this time, Jamaican ska bands and ska musicians took inspiration from American music and other countries. The Eric Deans Orchestra (perhaps the most famous ska band) came onto the scene, and ska music had officially been born. Ska music got its name from the sound made by the guitar as it played on the off beats. Ska music features the melding of jazz, soul, trumpets, and trombones to great effect. Ska music is a potpourri of different musical styles and genres. It takes swing, jazz, big band, soul, and rhythm and blues from the United States and couples it with calypso and mento (a cousin of calypso) to create the Jamaican ska. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Boston (with its many colleges and universities) became the perfect place for ska bands to emerge. Famous ska bands of then and today include Bim Skala Bim, Mr Cranky, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones ska band. Ska bands are perfect for any event where a Caribbean flavor is desired.
