Specializing in weddings, birthdays and family gatherings, Meiver - a fiery entertainer hailing from Dominican Republic, via Boston, Massachusetts - is now available for bookings in Chicago. With natural grace (her middle name) combined with a keen feel for Arabic rhythms, over the last 10 years she has been one of Boston's favorite and most sought after performers, working within the Middle Eastern community there. She currently is accepting bookings in Chicago and Boston.
Under the tutelage of some of the best-known names in this art form, Meiver has studied stage, folkloric, and social dances of the Near East, since 1996. She has been a long-term private student of Amar Gamal and Bozenka, and was a month-long guest instructor at Bozenka's Belly Dance Academy in Miami in January of 2009. Meiver toured in Taiwan with the Bellydance Superstars in 2009. A curious student, to date she has taken Dance classes in 7 countries around the world. In addition to Arab dance styles, she has studied Modern Dance, Flamenco, Afro-Brazilian dance styles, folk dances from Turkey, Central Asia and the Levant region, ballroom and ballet. In 2007 Meiver spent 3 months between Brazil and Argentina taking classes and workshops in the schools of dance stars like Lulu Sabongi (a close mentor), Amir Thaleb and Saida. She also spent time studying Afro-Brazilian dances in the Northeast of Brazil.
In addition to extensive work as a solo artist, Meiver has also performed Sharqi/Baladi, Arabic-Techno fusion, Bhangra and Turkish/Eastern European Folk Dances with such groups as Bellydance Overdrive and Collage Dance Ensemble (Ahmet Luleci's Boston-based folk dance company). Since it's inception in 2002, Meiver was a performer and choreographer for the Bellydance Overdrive dance group, along with the versatile Egyptian musician and dancer Karim Nagi Mohammed (a.k.a. Turbo Tabla), the uniquely talented dancer and singer Nina Torres from Brazil, and percussionist, video-producer and exceptional dancer Lauren-Michelle from the USA. This work has led Meiver to perform in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Connecticut, Utah, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Montreal, Canada. Karim Nagi has also been a great mentor for Meiver's musical literacy and understanding of Arab rhythms. In 2008 Meiver and Karim brought his 'Arab Dance Seminar' to Boston, which closed with a star-studded, free, gala concert of Arab music and dance open to the Boston Community.
Deeply committed to using art for social justice, Meiver is interested in exploring the role that the popularity of Arab arts can play in bridging cultural gaps between East and West. As part of her Master's Program in Gender and Cultural Studies at Simmons College in Boston, Meiver wrote her Master's thesis on the transnational, gender, and racial politics of dance, with particular focus on the role of American dancers in the global Belly Dance scene. She has been performing in the heart of Boston's Arab community for all of her dance career, and is frequently invited to lecture about the history and global context of the dance, as well as to teach and perform dance by community groups in Boston. She has been teaching Dance since 2002. Her teaching approach emphasizes the development of a dancer's technical skills and artistry, awareness of the dance's history, culture and context, musical literacy and performance readiness.
In addition to Chicago, Meiver will also travel to Cicero, Berwyn, Oak Park, Forest Park, Hines, Lyons, Riverside, Brookfield, Maywood, River Forest, Summit Argo, Carol Stream, La Grange Park, Bellwood, Bedford Park, Melrose Park, Westchester, Burbank, Bridgeview, Hillside, Hinsdale, Hometown, La Grange, River Grove, Stone Park, Western Springs, Berkeley, Franklin Park, Justice, Norridge
and many other locations in and around the Chicago area.
