One question that we hear time and time again from brides and grooms is: “Am I expected to tip wedding vendors — and how much?”

Tipping etiquette can be tricky and GigMasters has no formal tipping policy. But, since you asked…

I wouldn't go so far as to say that wedding performers and vendors expect tips, however our performers do report receiving tips at about half of all wedding gigs.

More than anything, tipping etiquette depends on the specific circumstances of your wedding. You might consider tipping if you feel that your wedding band or wedding DJ went above and beyond to make sure that everything went just right. If they did an absolutely amazing job, played all of your special requests and never complained when dealing with your overeager or over served guests — a tip could be in order.

I want to stress that tipping, though it is certainly a nice thing to do, is not required. Vendors understand that you are spending lots and lots of money on your wedding and there is not always room in the budget for tips. No one is going to think any less of you if you don't tip — they simply appreciate it when you do.

When it comes to the actual amount — well, that is up to you. Our performers report that 5% to 20% is appropriate and appreciated.

The same general rules should apply to your other vendors. You want to make sure to take care of those fine folks behind the scenes who made sure that your makeup, hair, food, and flowers were absolutely perfect. Gratuity for your waiters, waitresses and bar staff is most likely already included in your venue fee, though it wouldn't hurt to double-check.

The bottom line is that a tip is always a great way to show your appreciation for a job (very) well done.
