What does Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Strait, Zac Brown, Jason Aldean, Hank Williams Jr. & Sr., Wilson Pickett, Ton Loc, Commodores, Righteous Brothers, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Brooks & Dunn, Aerosmith, Journey, BB King, Stevie Wonder, and so many other artists and the songs they sing have in common? Randy Southpaw! Add some Kenny G, Big Band and Boots Randolph saxophone and keyboards to that and you've got Southpaw & Saxman.
As a professional entertainer and musician, Southpaw, now based out of North Texas(DFW area) has been performing throughout the Midwest and Texas for over 35 years. He spent ten of those years traveling on the road with his band 'Silk n Satin' and has been partnered up with his saxophonist/keyboard player, Gary 'Saxman' Bowman, for the past twenty years.
As a One Man Band, Southpaw mesmerizes audience with his left hand playing guitar while his right hand is playing the bass on a keyboard, all along while singing lead. Every once in a while he throws in some harmonica, percussion or just some good old hand clapping.
Born in Chicago and raised in Northern Illinois, he came down to Texas in the mid seventies and fell in love with it's down home country folk, Texas cookin', Texas music, and since the beginning has always been a die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan. As a young athlete he even tried out as a punter at one of the Cowboy's open tryout camps before getting seriously into his music.
Silk n Satin was a variety dance/show band emphasizing on the music. One of the main musical numbers in which Silk n Satin shined on was an intense and percussive musical arrangement where the drummer had eight foot flames shooting up from the drums while playing with flaming drum sticks as Southpaw and the bass player did choreographed kicks at each other's heads and ending the song with concert style flashpot explosions. The band had some great gifted singers each with totally different styles. Southpaw himself could go from sounding extremely similar to Willie Nelson, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, and Dwight Yoakum and then turn around and rock it out with a Bob Seger, Turn the Page/ZZ Top, Tush, La Grange, Blue Jean Blues/Bluesy rasp, Sky is Crying, House of the Rising Sun, or a strong clean Elvis, American Trilogy, One Night with You, Suspicious Minds or Oldies But Goodies 50's/60's, Unchained Melody, Blueberry Hill, Wasted Days & Wasted Nights style voice. He had and still has a commanding and powerful vocal range, yet able to soften it up for those special sensitive love songs. He sings from his heart and soul as well with technique and physicality. If it's modern sing-alongs, Southpaw & Saxman run the gamut of Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, Toby Keith's Red Solo Cup, David Allen Coe's You Don't Have to Call Me Darlin', the newer Darius Rucker's Wagon Wheel or Garth Brooks Friends in Low Places. Add those songs to your typical party songs, Proud Mary, Joy to the World, Mustang Sally/Wild Thing, Macarena, Blurred Lines, and your Oldies But Goodies 50's & 60's medleys, then you've already got quite an evening.
Southpaw met Saxman at a club in Dallas on Greenville Ave. around twenty years ago. They immediately clicked and have been performing clubs, restaurants, private functions and corporate events since. It is and has been definitely a wonderful ride. In 2013 they have performed at numerous private parties in the Cedar Creek Lake and North Texas areas and Charity events for Henderson County and Mexia, Texas, Humane Societies.
Saxman, AKA Santa Sax, himself is a character and a half. In many of the soprano sax style songs they perform he walks out into the audience wearing a wireless microphone entertaining the audience with his beautifully fluid and smooth sound. He is the Pied Piper of their songs and don't think he doesn't know it. Besides being a talented musician, during the holiday season he is a Professional Santa Clause and at kids parties a balloon clown. He had even succeeded a few years ago to appearing in a David Orreck vacuum cleaner commercial that aired nationally and before that Channel Eight in Dallas was so intrigued by him, followed him around town, filming what his day was like. The spot aired on Dallas' Channel Eight, CBS affiliate, during prime time and lasted over five minutes.
Southpaw & Saxman are always an excellent addition too any entertainment based event, whether it be dance, background or even concert music they more than fill the bill. If you close you're eyes you swear there are at least five musicians on stage. They are an experience to be reckoned with. Perfect for holiday events, corporate or private parties. They need at least a thirty five day window ahead to work any Friday or Saturday nights or far distant events. Most of December is already booked but if you've got a New Years Eve party in need of some fun and awesome music they are still available.
