I am a Washington, DC-based artist/pianist with a flare for the theatrical. I create in the moment, mixing my own improvisations and compositions in with familiar tunes you know and love. Some call it "stream of consciousness" music; others say they get chills or goosebumps when they hear me. My aim is to penetrate your soul and inspire you. Presentation is as important to me as how it sounds. Audience members say I "dance to the music." I to am currently the resident pianist at Salamander Resort and Spa, a new luxury resort in Middleburg, VA. You can come listen to me in the resort's living room (adjacent to the Gold Cup Wine Bar), where I entertain guests from 5pm to 8pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. When I am not performing there, I perform for events, parties, and weddings. I have performed at many venues along the east coast, including The Organization of American States (Washington, DC), Union Station (DC), Glaize Studio Theatre (Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA), The Mishler Theatre (Altoona, PA), The Tremont Grand Hotel (Baltimore), The Sheila Johnson Performing Arts Center (Middleburg, VA), Franklin Park Performing Arts Center (Purcellville, VA), and The Alden Theatre (McLean). I have also played with The McLean Symphony and Grammy-nominated artists.
PRINCIPLES MATTER. I strive to remain humble in my music career and to make each performance better than the last one. This is not a place for boasting of my accolades. As a customer, you want someone who is honest and someone who will show up on time -- someone who will play skillfully, with a commitment to excellence. As these are core principles of my faith, I strive to uphold these standards in everything I do.
HOW AM I UNIQUE? It is hard to box me into one genre. A writer who once interviewed me said,
"Her music is her own, and it is rhythmic and moving. Influenced by Scott Joplin, Alberto Ginestera, Gershwin, Debussy and Ravel, she fuses many different musical styles to produce her own innovative sounds. Her sense of internal rhythm coupled with her eclectic composition permits Jennifer to create a range of musical expression, all different yet exhibiting her identifiable style." (Blue Ridge Leader, 11/13/98)
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC CAN CUSTOMERS EXPECT? I leave that largely to the customer's discretion. My experience is so vast and varied, that I really feel comfortable in all styles, from top-40 ballades to classical -- from freestyle blues improvisation to Broadway. With my additional skills at composing and arranging, I am a self-described "piano stylist." This means that I go far beyond the notes on the page, taking customers' song requests and interpreting them in my own style. I enjoy customizing a unique musical program that will create a memorable musical setting for your event, and I even compose songs for weddings.
WHERE DID I BEGIN? I received my classical training from George Mason University, where I earned a BA in Music in 1999. After graduating, I moved to western Loudoun County, VA, about 50 minutes west of DC. In the next fourteen years, I served hundreds of families as a piano teacher. During those years I also continued to develop my gift of playing the piano by serving as church pianist and choir accompanist. By request, I also began making regular appearances in the musical theatre community, serving in many capacities, including accompanist, music director, arranger, and composer. During those years, I played for over twenty shows -- greatly augmenting my showtune repertoire. In 2004 I was commissioned to compose the music for a Very Special Arts production. In 2007, I was commissioned to arrange the music for an original musical by Tom Sweitzer ("Sky"), a production which featured a Helen-Hayes award-winning actress. In 2006, I recorded an album and self-produced a concert of my original work at the Sheila C. Johnson Performing Arts Center (The Hill School, Middleburg, VA). In addition to musical theatre, I have played many parties in private homes, and have played wedding receptions at Lightfoot Restaurant (Leesburg, VA), The Goodstone Inn (Middleburg, VA), and the Hyatt Fair Lakes (Fairfax, VA), and more. I have played wedding ceremonies at many churches in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, as well as The Goodstone Inn (Middleburg, VA).
