Born in Chicago, jazz pianist/composer Alan Stoumen began jazz lessons at age 13 with master jazz teacher Alan Swain at Swain Studios in Evanston , IL. Alan continued his training in jazz improvisational techniques and played in small combos and jazz ensembles at the University of Denver and the University of Colorado in Boulder. In 1980, Alan started playing professionally in Colorado while pursuing a B.A. and M.S in Biological Sciences. During his graduate career, Alan taught jazz piano to college students as an instructor in the Applied Music Program at the University of Colorado's Division of Continuing Education.
In 1989, Alan released his first CD of original music, "Necessary Changes" as a BMI-affiliated artist and composer, which received extensive airplay on local Colorado stations KUVO, KGNU, KBZE, KHIH, KDHT and KSMT. Local appearances included the Hotel Boulderado, Josephina's, The Mall Exchange, LaPrimavera, JJ McCabe's, the Westin Hotel and Keystone Resort.
In 1990, Alan received Certificate of Achievement Awards from Billboard Magazine for his original compositions "Broadway Shuffle" and "Ocean Child". In 1991, Alan recorded his second album of original music, "Nature Street", and appeared live with his band at such festival venues as Hyatt DTC Jazzfest, The Top of the Week Concert Series at the Denver Art Museum, The Breckenridge Jazz Festival and the Beaver Creek Arts Festival.
Alan currently resides with his family in Chapel Hill. Local performances have included the Sienna Hotel and Mansion 462 (Chapel Hill), Sullivan's Steakhouse (Raleigh), Notes ('Little' Washington) and Jazebel's (Burlington). In addition, Alan is a regular member of the Carolina Jazz & Blues collaborative, and performed with trumpeter Joe Sizemore and Friends at the 2010 Ochos Rios Jazz Festival in Jamaica.
