Scene
TUPELO - James Pirkle has loved music since he first heard it live.
And that first time was when his family played Christmas tunes for the holidays.
"My mom and uncle did old country and gospel songs at Christmas. I got a kick out of that, and I always wanted to do it, but I was too little," Pirkle said.
Seeing his mom and uncle's voices and the instruments working together hooked him.
"I was just amazed to see somebody playing it live and singing. I always heard music on the radio, but that just blew my mind, seeing it live," he said.
Pirkle got a guitar for Christmas one year as a child. It was years before he heard his biggest inspiration, Johnny Winter. Blues in his soul
After hearing artists like Winter, B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pirkle started picking the blues.
He loves all kinds of blues music, he said.
"There are so many different kinds of blues - it's kind of like Baskin-Robbins, there are so many flavors," he said, laughing. "There's something for everybody."
Pirkle joined longtime friends Larry Shaw and Ray West, and started the James Pirkle Blues Band. Ray's brother Brian West signed on to the band, and Kenny Herman joined, too. The men perform live in Tupelo, usually at the Musician's Playground.
The band does a mix of songs written by Shaw and Ray West, and cover songs.
The James Pirkle Blues Band just recorded a demo featuring both originals and covers.
Pirkle's love for the blues is reminiscent of his first few experiences with live music.
"(Blues songs) usually tell a story, and (I like) the way they always have something to say," he said, and smiled. "And I like the way the guitar sounds." Appeared originally in the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, 6/12/2008, section z , page 4
