(Bluegrass Now magazine) "Jennifer's voice is sweet and pure, even angelic … smoldering guitar leads" (Bluegrass Unlimited magazine) "Jennifer absolutely shines … gorgeous guitar work by Michael"
Husband and wife Banjocats, Michael and Jennifer McLain both grew up in musical families, are both banjo players, and have been playing together since their first date 17 years ago. Their concerts always include banjo, but also prominently feature outstanding vocals, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and upright bass. They have performed in 27 states from New York to California, Canada, and have appeared on The Nashville Network, Kentucky Educational Television, Iowa Public Television, and the Grand Ole Opry.
Growing up, Michael performed with his family, the McLain Family Band all across the United states and overseas, including concerts at Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum, the Lincoln Center, Chicago's Orchestra Hall, and the Grand Ole Opry. For several years he toured and recorded as part of the Claire Lynch Band as well as with Dale Ann Bradley. He was featured on a CD with Claire Lynch which was nominated for a Grammy. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Commercial Music degree from Belmont University (Nashville, TN) with an emphasis in banjo. He teaches guitar, banjo, and directs a bluegrass ensemble in the School of Music at Belmont University.
Jennifer has recorded vocals for major label, independent label, and demo sessions in Nashville. She has shared the stage with Vince Gill, Jennifer McCarter, Alan Hall, and Lisa Stewart. At an early age, Jennifer won awards at the banjo competition at the Galax Fiddler's Convention and went on to be a featured performer at Busch Gardens and the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. Jennifer graduated from Elon University in Elon, NC with a degree in Music Performance (saxophone!) and holds a Masters degree in Counseling. She is a member of the Christ Church choir in Nashville, TN.
Here are a few examples of how we approach different events.
Community Concert / Outdoor Festival:
We deliver an evening of music in an artistic and engaging way with our vision of who we are musically. We hope that people will connect with us through our music.
Corporate Event / Private Function:
We provide upbeat, professional sets to keep the energy up. We can mix in songs that people recognize from traditional and contemporary icons in bluegrass music.
We enjoy contributing music which help to make them extraordinary. For the ceremony, we can focus on traditional wedding repertoire, early American music, bluegrass/country love songs, or instrumental hymns. For the reception, we can emphasize love songs, upbeat songs and instrumentals, artistic background music, or a combination of these things.
At any type of event, we are glad to mix in some specialty pieces.
We have an excellent sound system which is available upon request.

Wedding Reception in Allensville, KY on 09/29/2012
"The Banjocats are top-notch in professionalism, musicianship, and in just being all-around nice, wonderful people to have at our wedding reception. The highlight of the night came when my daughter was supposed to sing for the first dance of the new couple (her brother being the groom), and I was supposed to accompany her on a keyboard. I brought the wrong electrical plug, so we had no keyboard. In my panic, Jennifer says "Can we help you?" She made a chord chart of the song, and the whole group played from that. They rehearsed with my daughter for about 10 minutes during a break, and the performance was so beautiful and special! Banjocats are THE BEST! "

Wedding Reception in Troy, OH on 08/03/2013
"Wow! The Banjocats were amazing. They sounded perfect for my event. They were kind enough to play acoustically downstairs at the venue and then move upstairs for the dancing. People keep asking me about the band and my father-in-law is actually planning on seeing the band play at a local festival! I would highly recommend this band. We had such a good time. "

Memorial Service in Goodlettsville, TN on 08/04/2012
"Banjocats have a wonderful blend of talent, sound and personality. Their beautiful music was the highlight of our event. They worked closely with me determining music selection and in every way, made our event absolutely wonderful and memorable. I am still receiving accolades from our guests about the music and everyone asks how I was able to find them. I highly recommend them for whatever occasion you are hosting. They are professional in every way and their sound has a wide appeal. I defintely will invite them to play when I host another party. Thank you Banjocats and GigMasters for making my event turn out exactly the way I had hoped. Five Stars in every way!"

Concert in Chicago, IL on 06/01/2013
"Normally I don’t write reviews but absolutely had to because the Banjocats are AMAZING! We hired for our outdoor, rooftop party in Chicago but it rained and we didn’t have a contingency plan. The Banjocats were so flexible, patient and willing to make anything work. We dragged them from full outdoor setup to outdoor acoustic to indoor acoustic to outdoor full setup again plus they were carrying their equipment and instruments each time! But that doesn’t compare to their great talent. They knew how to get the crowd going, mix it up, feature each player and really create a wonderful atmosphere for our party. Would absolutely hire them again in a heartbeat!"

Wedding Reception in Chattanooga, TN on 10/06/2012
"The Banjocats were the perfect band for our daughter's Barn wedding and reception. Everyone enjoyed their wonderful bluegrass music throughout the evening. I loved the fact that they were able to play some traditional ceremony music in addition to entertaining the crowd during the reception. Michael handled the details before the wedding so professionally and sent us a CD of various songs they play. I would highly recommend the Banjocats to others!"
