Century Russell is a performance artist, silhouette artist and member of the Guild of American Papercutters.

To create a silhouette the subject sits, as for a portrait, showing their profile. With fine scissors, their silhouette is cut in silhouette paper.

Silhouettes are unique likenesses, not copies. The silhouette artist needs to express certain facial attributes not visible in the profile. A person who has a pleasant or smiling face, may have a profile that suggests a frown or downcast look. Without sacrifice to accuracy, the artist can convey the desired characteristics of the subject in the cutting.

One of the hallmarks of a professional is the rapid cutting of the silhouette. Century generally cuts his silhouettes in under 90 seconds.

Once the silhouette is cut, embellishments are added. These are cuts into the silhouette that indicate curls, bows, neckwear or other features.
The silhouette is now pasted on a contrasting background and framed.
