A native of Michigan, Fred first became interested in magic when he was 8 years old. "I saw Mark Wilson on TV in 'The Magic Land of Alakazam'. He was making a lady float in the air and I was totally amazed!" He ran to the library and checked out every book he could find on magic. He started making props out of tissue paper and tin cans and even stole his parents playing cards to learn card tricks. Soon after, he was driving his family crazy, asking them to: "Pick a card, any card"! Fred made his professional debut at the Public Library in Niles, Michigan at age 13, performing a 30 minute show for all ages. After that, throughout high school, he continued to work as a magician at birthday parties, school and library events, auxiliary meetings as well as civic and corporate banquets. His big break came a few years later when he was working back stage at the Miss Niles contest when at the contest Miss Michigan performed a magic act using doves. Fred told her that he too was a magician and had some ideas that might improve her act. Shortly after their meeting she hired Fred as a consultant to work with her on her act in preparation for the Miss USA pageant. The following year she got engaged and gave her props to Fred, who re-worked them and performed his new act at the Miss Niles Pageant! In 1980, Fred moved to Chicago and joined the civilian work force leaving the magic equipment in Michigan. Four years later his parents tired of storing his props and they were moved to Illinois to be stored by him. That same year the company he was working for asked him if he could perform in the Employee Talent Show at their Holiday Party. He told them "I used to do some magic; would that be ok?" The seven-minute routine he did, in which he pushed a sword thru the company president's neck, made a strong impression on his co-workers. "Everybody loved it, They couldn't stop talking about it" he remembers. That started it all over again - the bug. The need to do magic re-appeared. "It was like I was eight years old again!" Deciding he wanted to do magic again, but on a larger scale, he began investing in stage illusions and found an assistant (a friend's 15 year old sister). After that the show began to grow one assistant at a time until 1989 When he got the idea to combine magic and dance. With 12 Dancer/Assistants and a Crew of 14 The Show was called The Magic Company and combined Magic, Music and Motion in a two-hour stage spectacular that he headlined for six years! In 1994 Fred Paul Bailey and The Magic Company was the only local act to be featured in the full length evening shows at the Society of American Magician 75th annual Convention in Chicago. They were chosen to be the opening act, opening night. It was an honor and experience Fred says, "I'll never forget!" In addition to magic, Fred Paul Bailey is an accomplished actor, singer and dancer. He has appeared in A Chorus Line, Hello Dolly!, The Music Man, Grease, 42nd Street, Brian's Song, The Ledgend of Ichabod Crane, The Mouse Trap and has appeared as a special guest in numerous variety shows.
