Virtuoso clarinetist Todd Brunel and 'Masterful Boston guitarist' (Josef Woodard, Downbeat Magazine) Eric Hofbauer, two original and in-demand musicians, have formed a duo with the explicit goal to perform at house concerts, private functions and other small venues or events in New England.
After years of working together in various creative projects, including the Variable Density Sound Orchestra featuring Jazz legend John Tchicai, the two formed a duo to perform Swing and Bop Era classic repertoire with a modern twist. Their unique clarinet and guitar combination blends the legacy of the Benny Goodman/Charlie Christian, and Jim Hall/Jimmy Giuffre traditions with a highly conversational, modern rhythmic style. The duo is perfectly suited for intimate setting of quiet listening, or functions where the music adds culture and atmosphere to the surroundings.
Todd Brunel is an innovative, critically acclaimed clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and producer who performs extensively as a classical and improvisational musician. As a jazz/improvisational performer and composer, he produces The Vortex Series for New and Improvised Music and is a grant recipient from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Cambridge Arts Council, the Somerville Arts Council and Art Without Borders. Among his hundreds of performances at clubs and social establishments, Brunel and his groups have played at the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Boston Jazz Festival, The Bowery Poetry club, Mobius, The International Woodwind Festival, Preservation Jazz Hall, Ryles, CBGB's Gallery, The Boston Music Festival and the American Microtonal Festival under the direction of Johnny Reinhard and Spazio Teatro NO'HMA in Milan. He is a founding member of the Armenian Folk Fusion project Musaner, the Circadian Rhythm Kings and is a member of Jerry Sabatini's Sonic Explorers. His work with conductor and composer Lawrence D. 'Butch' Morris includes the New York Skyscraper Conductions #73-76 at Context and the New England Skyscraper Conductions #151-153. As a classical freelance musician, Mr. Brunel's busy performance schedule includes ALEA III, Ensemble St Germain, the Lexington Symphony, the Bulgarian Virtuosi, The New Bedford Symphony, the Waltham Symphony, the Claflin Hill Symphony and the Chagall Performance Art Collaborative. He is currently on the faculty of Wheaton College in Norton, MA. "Tremendous Virtuosity and heart" The Boston Globe
“Eric Hofbauer has become a significant force in Boston's improvised-music scene,” declares Stereophile's David R. Adler, “His aesthetic evokes old blues, Americana, Tin Pan Alley, and bebop. There's a rule-breaking spirit but also an impeccable rigor, a foundation of sheer chops and knowledge, that put Hofbauer in the top tier of guitarists.”Hofbauer has been an integral member of Boston's jazz scene as a musician, bandleader, organizer and educator for the past fifteen years, where he has performed and recorded alongside such notable collaborators as Han Bennink, Roy Campbell, Jr., John Tchicai, Garrison Fewell, Cecil McBee, Steve Swell and Matt Wilson. Hofbauer is perhaps best known for his solo guitar work featured in a trilogy of solo guitar recordings (American Vanity, American Fear and American Grace). Of the trilogy, Andrew Gilbert of The Boston Globe writes, “No other guitarist in jazz has developed a solo approach as rigorous, evocative, and thoughtful as Hofbauer”.Hofbauer has also earned critical acclaim for his work in a variety of musical projects, including recordings with the Garrison Fewell/Eric Hofbauer Duo, Garrison Fewell's Variable Density Sound Orchestra, The Pablo Ablanedo Octet(o) and The Blueprint Project with Han Bennink. In 2009, Hofbauer was honored with the Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship in Music Composition.
