Description

The legendary Las Vegas hotel, The Sands, was founded by Jakie Freedman, a native Texan. In the late fifties and early sixties, some of the greatest names in entertainment graced the stage of the world-renowned Copa Room at The Sands: Sinatra, Martin, Darin, Cole, Basie, Garland and Bennett, among other legendary performers. This was an era when swing was king, everyone smoked cigarettes and "getting stoned" meant having a few too many cocktails. Now, fifty years later, it seems fitting that a group of musicians, calling themselves The Copa Kings, also hail from the Lone Star State.

The Copa Kings were formed in Austin, Texas, out of a desire to breathe new life into some of the great jazz standards of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. With great reverence, the band brings a unique passion, artistry and flair to the jazz music of this period. Led by vocalist Billy Murphy, The Copa Kings pay homage to some of our country's greatest jazz songwriters and performers. Members of the ensemble have played with locally and nationally known acts, including The Atlantics, White Ghost Shivers, The Jazz Pharaohs and The Blackbird Trio.

Feedback

  • The Copa Kings put on an outstanding show at our wedding reception. They are not only expertly skilled musicians, they have tremendous energy and style as they arrange universally beloved jazz/swing classics in a fresh and fun performance. We had such a fantastic time dancing, and everyone said they "made the party." Billy, the leader, was also very accommodating and communicative. He sent us a sample of the song we used for the first dance so we could practice, and he also arranged a song that was not in their original repertoire at our request. The Copa Kings are exceptional performers and professionals. They made the evening of our wedding so fun and memorable! -- Kate H, San Antonio, TX, 3/30/2012
  • The Copa Kings performed at my wedding this past January 2012 and they were awesome!!! Not only were they super professional in that they were quick to respond to emails and phone calls but they were super helpful and accommodating ! we had them play at our wedding as well as a Dj that came in after and they allowed the Dj to use their new sound system so that there wouldn't be this awkward transition period in between them and the Dj. and to top it all off they did an awesome job performing! vocals sounded great as well as instrumentals. everybody loved it! I strongly recommend the Copa Kings!! -- Lauren C, Austin, TX, 1/14/2012
  • We could not have been happier with TCK! Prior to the wedding, Billy (band leader, singer) was very responsive to emails, always available to answer our questions and to go over details, making us very at ease. He knew more about planning receptions than we did and his advice was excellent. The music-the performance- they are so talented! We had a 20's-inspired reception and TCK has such a fantastic range of swingy and slow jazz sets that captured our theme so well that people kept telling us that they felt like they were in a movie! They covered "Feeling Good" in Michael Buble style for our first dance and it was absolutely perfect. THANK YOU for everything TCK!! -- Amanda L, Austin, TX, 5/22/2011
  • The Copa Kings made our wedding the most fabulous event you can possibly imagine!! They are so talented and charming! I had family and friends coming up to me during and after our wedding bragging about how much they enjoyed the band! Billy (the band leader/singer) sounds honestly, better than Frank Sinatra himself. Not to mention the fact that he personalized songs for my husband and I, hand picked special songs for father/daughter dance, made special announcements for our cake cutting, etc. Thanks Billy and the Copa Kings for making our special night absolutely PERFECT. We appreciate you and we will continue spreading the word about your charm and talent!! -- Sandy D, Austin, TX, 12/18/2010
