Kathleen McCann Harpist from Alexandria, VA

Kathleen has enjoyed learning about the traditional Irish harp, which she has played for nine years, and has been privileged to accept invitations to volunteer and play at celebrations in Washington, D.C., New York City, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. A musician by avocation, Kathleen studied classical music as a child, and embraced the folk tradition as an adult. Her early encounters with Irish music began in her family, picking out tunes by ear on the tin whistle. Her first encounter with the Irish (or lever) harp began in France while teaching. She enjoys a small bit of composing and arranging, as well. The buoyant tone of the Irish harp sets a graceful tone for an event, encouraging lively and uplifting conversation. Somewhat more petite than the classical harp, the smaller size of the Irish harp allows for easy transportation, keeping logistical issues to a minimum and making it a practical choice for hard-to-reach locations.
