Description

We specialize in jazz/improvised music, classical music, indie rock, world music, ambient and acoustic music and instrumental classic rock, funk, modern reggae and popular song. Karla Harby serves as principal flutist and bandleader, plays at every performance, and performs on concert flute, alto flute, and Native American flutes. She works with wonderful musicians who play guitar, violin, harp, mandolin, 'ukulele, saxophone, 'cello, Native American flute, acoustic piano, kalimba, percussion, tablas, drum kit and upright acoustic bass.

All the musicians in this group are exceptionally skilled and experienced performers. We've played on multiple yacht cruises around Manhattan; outdoors in gazebo gardens; for students at several area universities; for business conventions; in formal recitals; for weddings in historic mansions, castles and in elegant New York City hotels, such as the Waldorf-Astoria and The Plaza; for several New York City Marathons and for the VIP party at the 2010 AIDS Walk New York; and in New York City apartments for intimate private parties. Liability insurance policy in place, so we can play any venue.

Our world music repertoire includes Italian, Brazilian, Hawaiian, Celtic and Klezmer songs.

We happily accept unique song requests 1 month in advance of the event date at no additional charge.

PLEASE VISIT OUR OTHER GIGMASTERS PRESS KIT, "KARLA HARBY OUTCATS," FOR ADDITIONAL TESTIMONIALS. The direct link is at bottom of this press kit.

We also perform many, many classical selections as a violin and flute duo, as a flute and guitar duo, as a harp and flute duo, or in classical trio or classical music quartet configurations.

Our classical repertoire includes Pachelbel's Canon in D; J.S. Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, among many other Bach compositions; Vivaldi's Concerti for guitar; aires by Charles Koechlin for solo flute; and the Telemann Twelve Fantasies, also for solo flute.

We also play Berceuse Op. 16 by Gabriel Faure; Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart; Gymnopedies by Erik Satie; Pavane Op. 50 by Faure; Sleepers Wake by Bach; Sicilienne by Faure; The Swan by Camille Saint-Saens; and La Fille aux Cheveus de Lin by Claude Debussy.

Also: The Wedding March from Midsummer Night's Dream by Mendelssohn; the Rondeau by Mouret (also known as the Masterpiece Theatre Theme); Mozart's Wedding March from the Marriage of Figaro; Purcell's Trumpet Voluntary and his Trumpet Tune; Ave Maria (versions by Schubert or by Gounod); Wagner's Bridal Chorus.

We have amplification equipment or can play unplugged in an intimate setting, if desired. When needed we use the excellent Bose PAS Tower amplification system, which can accommodate up to four instruments in a small amount of space. We also have battery powered amps for parks.

We are travelers and will consider performing anywhere. Our usual stomping ground includes New York City (Brooklyn), upstate New York and Long Island, New Jersey (Atlantic City), Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), Massachusetts (Boston), Delaware and Connecticut.

We love to play, and would love to perform for you! Thank you for your interest in our music.

Additional biographical information:

Karla Harby has been performing in the New York area since 2002, and has been honored to work with many of New York City's most beautifully talented musical artists.

In addition to playing concert flute, alto flute and Native American flute, Karla performs on drum kit and hand percussion instruments. She plays studio dates for other musicians' recordings; and she has played on multiple tracks for City Canyon Records. Her band experience includes Latin jazz, jam band, classical ensembles and jazz-rock fusion bands.

Her flute playing is heard in the indie film by director Steve Mallorca, Slow Jam King, which had its debut at the Asian American International Film Festival in New York City in July 2004. The movie was favorably reviewed in The New York Times on June 9, 2006, prior to a week of New York City screenings. The film's soundtrack has been praised by the Village Voice, among other publications.

In 2005, Karla Harby and her jazz group received a Residency Grant from Chamber Music America to conduct a series of jazz and blues workshops at the Roosevelt (N.Y.) High School. The band was joined by Judi Silvano, the well-known jazz vocalist and workshop leader.

Most recently Karla Harby co-produced a CD of New Age music released April 1, 2010 called "Waves of Time," with her musical collaboration called No Mud No Lotus. Her concert flute and Native American flute playing is also featured on the City Canyons record label on tracks released in the winter of 2011.

Music from a previous CD, "Last Cigarette," (2004), has been licensed for television programs, including the Travel Channel, the History Channel and Runway Moms (Canada) and by Getty Images. Tracks from this disk also received radio airplay in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Feedback

  • KARLA PLAYS AN AWESOME FLUTE. SHE WAS JOINED BY JIMI DURSO ON ACCOUSTIC GUITAR. FOR MY "GIG" THEY PLAYED BACKGROUND MUSIC FOR MY WIFES 40TH BIRTHDAY DINNER AS REQUESTED AND DID A GREAT JOB! -- Robert H, West Orange, NJ, 7/7/2007
  • We booked Karla and Jimi (they played as a duo-- flute and ukulele/mandolin/guitar) the same week as our wedding, and they rolled with everything and helped make it a memorable event. the Hawaiian style version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is really great. -- Michael F, New Hope, PA, 3/16/2008
  • Excellent musicians and very easy to work with. Karla and I were able to coordinate long distance via internet and phone. Karla provided me with suggestions and links to popular wedding music that I selected from. They were able to play from a song list that I helped to create. They style was very versatile, but they excelled in classical and soft jazz, that allowed guests to talk and mingle during the event. I would highly recommend them for future events. -- Jill G, Princeton, NJ, 9/2/2007
  • Very Professional and punctual. Received more than I expected, they extended their services alittle linger, since all of my guest were not there at the stated time. This was done at no extra charge, I would definitely use Karla Harby Trio for another event. -- Dominique S, Franklin Square, NY, 11/11/2006
  • Really glad she arrived very early. Was able to have several questions answered. Not a single complaint. Very satisfied with the music and her efforts. -- Francis S, Dedham, MA, 7/13/2008
  • They came on time, and offered us what we had asked for: quiet, classical music. They played many of the songs that we had requested. Our guests enjoyed their performance, too. -- Tomoko K, New York, NY, 3/4/2007
  • I only needed a Harpist for my wedding, so it wasn't the entire trio. The booking was easy, and all went well. The harpist was great and there were no problems at all. -- Penny C, New York, NY, 5/1/2006
