From the streets of Baltimore and Pittsburgh came a revolutionary new sound for its day. Kids singing on corners accompanied themselves with made-up sounds rather than instruments. Using phrases like "doo-wop," "shu-bop" and "sha na na na," The Silhouettes, Little Anthony, The Shangri-Las and more kept our ears to the radio trying to learn the "dips" and "yips" and "rama-lamas" that doo-wop bands rattled off at lightning speed. This fun new style of doo-wop music that was originally developed in the late 30s and 40s would become a mainstay for the duration of the 50s and part of the 60s. In fact, in the 1970s and 1980s, a resurgence of doo-wop music could be found in songs like Electric Light Orchestra's "Telephone Line" and Billy Joel's "The Longest Time." Virtually any music that creates its own accompaniment could be considered doo-wop music.
