Choosing the Right Classical Music for Your Special EventWhen the phrase "classical music" comes up in conversation, many people automatically envision an entire orchestra led by a long-haired conductor who is frantically waving his baton at the climax of Beethoven's 5th. While this certainly can be one form of classical music, there are also many others. You don't need to have an entire orchestra at your disposal in order to enjoy live, classical music. In fact, another notable phrase - "chamber music" - defines just that. Chamber music is classical music played by a small ensemble, without a conductor. It is meant to be played within a small space (or chamber). While not included in the definition of chamber music, you can also have classical music played by an instrumental soloist. To choose the right classical or chamber music for your next event, look more to the instruments themselves. The types of soloists or groups you should hire will depend on what the event is and how it will unfold. Chamber Music InstrumentsBecause chamber music is best suited for enclosed areas, the melodies are usually soft and lulling. The most popular instruments on which chamber music is played include strings (especially string quartets) and piano. Alternatively, woodwind and brass instruments are included. The diminished volume of stringed instruments (such as violins, violas and cellos) makes them highly desirable for wedding receptions, private parties, restaurant settings or other intimate affairs. Classical Music InstrumentsClassical music in a variety of styles can be played on everything from a piccolo or flute to a trumpet or a French horn. If your event will be within a large facility, you could easily book a brass (trumpet, French horn, etc.) or woodwind (clarinet, saxophone, etc.) ensemble without fear of being too loud for the comfort of your guests. In addition to the traditional players, a classical guitar, or organ would work nicely with many other instruments or as solo efforts. If your event is indoors, you'd be wise to consider chamber music. Other instruments would likely be too loud unless the arena or facility is large enough to accommodate the volume. If your event will be held outdoors, consider woodwind, piano or brass instruments to play your classical music selections. While the diminished tones of string and woodwind instruments might get lost in the crowd, the woodwind, brass and piano tunes will have what is needed to be heard throughout your event. |
