About

Looking for an amazing bluegrass group? Look no further than Las Vegas favorites Out of the Desert. Bringing Traditional, Gospel, Celtic and Newgrass material to a new level, this band is made up of talented lifelong players who truly love what they do and it shows. Performing weekly at the Bluegrass Hangover Brunch (ranked in the Top 10 in Las Vegas) this group is fun, polished and energetic. With 4 part vocals and award-winning instrumentalists, this group is simply one of the best in West.

Members:

Rick Seligman, Fiddle

Rick started playing the fiddle in 1976 mostly in fiddle contests around Southern California for a few years. Then he joined the bluegrass band The Rank Strangers for a 10 year stay. He then moved on to other bands, two of which were Rock Springs and Mohave Country. Rick moved to Las Vegas in 1995 and started playing with a band called Ernie Cockran and the New South and The Las Vegas Blues Kings. His next step was Irish music and did 3 years with Finnegans Wake playing Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and later with an Irish band called the Las Vegas String Band in 2005. In 2006 Rick won the Nevada state fiddle championship.

Mark Sanders, Banjo/Vocals

Mark is from Manhattan Beach, CA and was introduced to bluegrass music through TV and movies like Beverly Hillbillys, Bonnie and Clyde (Foggy Mountain Breakdown), and Deliverance (Dueling Banjos). He started playing around 1971. His experience is mostly from playing on the streets for tips which was done regularly and successfully along the West Coast - Redondo Beach, CA, Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, BC. Along the way he played with two bands of note - The Dynamic Logs and The Skyline Drifters, both based in Seattle. Mark moved to Boulder City, Nevada in 2000 and joined Out of the Desert in 2008.

John Lundmark, Guitars/Vocals

John was born in Las Vegas. He learned the guitar in junior high school, and graduated from Rancho High School. After high school John went to work as a plumber pipefitter and is referred to as the 'singing plumber'. Through the years he has performed in plays, musical theatre, and a few TV commercials. Around 1999 he was asked by friends to play guitar and do some three part vocals with them. That's when he met Rick Seligman, the fiddle player. They went on to form Out of the Desert in 2008.

Jon Meek, Dobro / Mandolin / Fiddle, Vocals

John Meek began playing guitar as a young child in Delaware. He met a teacher who turned him on to bluegrass music. Before long he bought his first banjo and was completely obsessed with learning to play. Eventually, his teacher sent him off to take some banjo lessons from the great Tony Trischka. He played with the Bridger Creek Boys, a bluegrass band that performed frequently throughout Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. After moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2009, he graduated with his Master's of Music degree from University of Nevada Las Vegas, with a concentration in Music Education. In July 2011 he won 1st place in the dobro competition at the Rockygrass Bluegrass Festival in Lyons, Colorado. He plays dobro, mandolin, and fiddle with Out of the Desert.

Brian Burns. Bass, Vocals

Brian is a 23 year resident of Las Vegas who originally hails from Wellington, Ohio. The son of southern parents, he has been a huge fan of bluegrass music his entire life. Playing in bands since the age of 13, he plays the electric and upright basses as well as guitar. A lefty who was self taught and not knowing any better, turned a right-handed bass upside down to play it and still plays that way to this day. Previously playing with Northwest bluegrass bands such as Bonneville Slide, the New Old Timers and Switchgrass, Brian loves to perform the music of his roots and pay homage to the innovators of bluegrass.
