DESCRIPTION:
Astrograss is an all-acoustic 4-piece band from New York City performing a combination of bluegrass, newgrass, and their own original sound, astrograss. The repetoire includes traditional bluegrass material, modern sounding originals, bluegrass takes on pop/country tunes, and ANY request you might have.
Astrograss was formed in summer 2003 when guitarist Jordan Shapiro (keyboardist for the touring Zappa tribute band Project/Object) recruited bassist Tim Kiah of Jazz Passenger Roy Nathanson's band, violinist Alan Grubner of Henry Threadgill's Aggreagation Orb and mandolinist Dennis Lichtman of Mori Stylez to play the music he had been writing over the last few years. Astrograss seeks to push the newgrass envelope with their genre-defying compositions, eclectic improvisations and intricate arrangements.
Collectively, the band members' resumes include performances and collaborations with Eddie Palmieri, Phish's Mike Gordon, Lenny Kravitz, and Zappa vocalists Ike Willis and Napolean Murphy Brock. Astrograss is available for both club and festival dates, and private events.

What a fabulous, professional, talented group! They were the perfect band for my party of 60 people in my NYC garden. They came right on time, were willing to forgo their amplifiers to suit my small venue and played a delightful mix of bluegrass, blues and even some country folk. Lots of delightful banjo, mandolin and fiddle plus great guitar and bass. They played constantly or three hours with only a couple of short breaks playing their own stuff plus lots of requests including Ashokin Farewell, Tennessee Stud and several Johnny Cash tunes. They are a cheerful group who clearly love what they do and their enthusiasm and great sound-entirely acoustic!- were a wonderful addition to my party. I'd hire them again in a flash.
