About

Darrell Calvillo is an open class solo competitor, band leader, musical arranger, studio musician, instructor, band clinician, and proprietor of DC Music with over a decade of professional experience in the music industry.

As a performer, Darrell is a member of Celtic/World Band Silent Planet, the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Pipe & Drums, and also performs with various bands, ensembles, or a soloist at various public and private events around North America. In the entertainment industry, Darrell has spent countless hours in the studio and recently has been featured by Lee Whittaker, KC and the Wright Combination, and Robbie Bray. Darrell has also been in television filmings for Bridezillas, TLC, CSI-NY, and onstage with groups such as the Chieftains.

Experience the majestic sound, romance, and pageantry of military bagpipe and drum bands or the toe tapping melodies and dances of a Celtic pub band. Darrell is very versatile in that he play three different types of bagpipes: the Great Highland Bagpipes (aka Irish warpipe), Scottish smallpipes, the Irish uilleann (Gaelic for "elbow") pipes, as well as low whistle and penny whistle. He is available for any private or public performance as a soloist or with one of his ensembles. To make your event truly unique and special have a piper/drummer duet, complete bagpipe band, or Celtic/World band Silent Planet. Prices are reasonable, especially considering Darrell only works with serious professional musicians, not home town amateurs and is a proud member of the American Federation of Musicians.

Darrell began his obsession with making music at age nine when he began his studies on violin. Aside from school music programs he performed with the Citrus College Summer Youth Orchestra and Claremont Youth Orchestra. At age 13, Darrell began to learn the bagpipes and joined the Glendora High School Pipe Band. His first formal instruction in piping was from Jeffrey Henderson and Colin Armstrong. Darrell received formal training in music theory and performance at Citrus College and the University of La Verne. At Citrus College he began to learn baritone saxophone and explored different styles of music. He performed in various school groups, including the Sierra Wind Symphony, big band, and Latin (salsa and cumbia) ensemble. Studies at the University of La Verne reverted to classical studies. These musical foundations in combination with tutelage of master pipers Murray Henderson, Ian Whitelaw, and Seumas Coyne have gifted Darrell with extensive experience in western classical music with specialization in the Celtic genre.

Serving as pipe sergeant, Darrell was a member of the former grade 2 James J. Coyne Memorial Pipe Band from 2006 to 2011. He is a principal instructor for the James J. Coyne Memorial School of Piping and Drumming. For over a decade Darrell has instructed and mentored numerous competition bands, performance bands, and scores of individual students.
