The NY Western Swing All-Stars use their unique instrumentation to explore that infectious and incredibly diverse set of styles that came together in the 1930's to become known as "western swing." Is it country music? Is it swing music? Yes and yes!
The NY Western Swing All-Stars have appeared at Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Folk Festival, Bayou & Boogie Festival, Princeton Jazz Festival, Stone Barns Harvest Fest, as well as countless weddings, BBQ's, pig roasts, corporate picnics, and birthday parties, in addition to a steady schedule of shows in and around New York City. The band began performing together in early 2010.
Western swing, the genre, evolved as fiddlers and other musicians in western Texas, began blending their old-timey fiddle dance music with folk, early country, dixieland jazz and swing, blues, and the popular music that they heard on the radio. Bob Wills and Milton Brown were two notable pioneers of western swing, and both are huge influences on the NY Western Swing All-Stars. Can you dance to it? Heck yeah! Can you sit and listen to it? Sure can, unless your feet direct you otherwise!
The NY Western Swing All-Stars usually perform as a 6-piece band, but can sometimes scale down in size for smaller events, and often add musicians for a larger, more diverse, more thumpin' sound. Based upon the event, the song selection can be geared more in the country direction or more in the swing/dixieland jazz direction, or let us feel out the crowd, and we'll mix things up just right. For weddings, we can generally accommodate a reasonable number of special requests for first dances, ceremony music, etc.
