Known in Beach Music circles as the keyboardist/vocalist/producer of 3 of it's most enduring groups, The Catalinas, The Entertainers and The Embers, Johnny Barker is now offering his services as a solo performer. In addition to performing with the Legends of Beach and operating his studio...Barker Productions, where much of the "sound of beach music" originates, Johnny is also very proficient in jazz and solo piano, perfect for background dinner music. (weddings & rehearsal dinners)
Any fan of Carolina Beach Music knows the song, that Johnny wrote and produced in 1975, the trend setting "Summertime's Callin' Me" , originally recorded by The Catalinas. According to BMI, it is still played regularly on radio stations, internet streams and iPods around the world and was listed in Rolling Stone magazine as the number 6 most popular Beach Music song ever. It was the first of it's kind and is credited for being partially responsible for the new direction of "Carolina Beach Music" that followed. Among numerous other awards, Johnny was presented with the "Lifetime Achievment Award" at the Carolina Beach Music Awards in 2003. His vocal rendition/arrangement of "Summerwind", originally recorded by Frank Sinatra, was one of the top ten most popular Beach Music songs of 2007 according to 94.9, The Surf in Myrtle Beach. Thru the years he has appeared in shows with The Temptations, The Four Tops, Sonny & Cher, Little Anthony & the Imperials, The Tams, Chairmen of the Board, The Shirelles, The Marveletts, Herman's Hermits, Lee Dorsey, Wilson Picket, Rufus Thomas, James Brown, Barry White, Bobby Hebb, Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, Martha Reeves, Sugarloaf, Dionne Warwick, The Muppets Orchestra, Bobby Vinton, Frankie Avalon, Jimmy Walker, The Guess Who, The North Carolina Symphony, etc,. etc.
