Although more refined than bebop jazz or boogie-woogie, 40s big band music was what the crowds craved. At the hands of Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey and other famous bandleaders, the formal instrumentation of an orchestra and the rhythmic vocals of 20s and 30s black jazz singers collided to offer a very particular 1940s music style. A typical big band ensemble consists of five saxophones, four trombones, five trumpets and four in the rhythm section (piano, bass, guitar and drums).
