The Uptown Rhythm Makers came together in 2003 expressly to play jazz in the New Orleans style. Each musician has a great knowledge of and feel for playing traditional jazz, and they are some of the very best in San Diego County playing in the New Orleans style. Members of the Uptown Rhythm Makers also play in or lead at least 18 other local bands and orchestras.
Since January, 2004, we play a monthly concert/dance at the Claire de Lune Coffee Lounge in North Park, where all ages are welcome. (First Friday of the month.)
Other notable gigs:
* All Things Swing dance (2 times)
* Lakeside Jazz Club in Lake Elsinore, monthly dance (7 times)
* 2005 Gaslamp Quarter Mardi Gras
* San Diego Convention Center, for UCSD Medical Center's annual dinner/dance
* Hillcrest Mardi Gras (2008, 2009, 2010)
* Firehouse swing dance (2 times)
It's hard to sit still when you hear the New Orleans style of jazz with its exuberant swing. Dancers and listeners alike enjoy our repertoire of parade and Mardi Gras songs, spirituals and gospel songs, traditional New Orleans jazz tunes, the blues and the popular dance music of the 1920s and 1930s, especially drawing on the repertoires of the 1920s New Orleans dance bands. It is "music for all occasions".
One last thing to mention is that this band has a great fun-loving spirit - the audience senses it and has almost as much fun as the musicians themselves.
